How to Sell Printables Online: A Step-by-Step Guide for Planners and Templates

4 min read

Quick answer

  1. 1Pick a narrow niche.
  2. 2Make the file in a design tool you already know.
  3. 3Export a print-ready PDF (US Letter and A4) and test print it.
  4. 4Create clear preview images.
  5. 5Write a listing and choose where to sell.

Step 1: Choose a niche

Practical, specific printables are easier to describe and easier for buyers to find. Think "weekly study planner for college students" rather than "planner". Budget trackers, meal planners and small-business templates are common examples. Pick something you understand and can make well.

Step 2: Create the file

Free or low-cost tools work fine: Canva, Google Docs or Slides, and Affinity are all common choices. Design at US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) and A4 (210 × 297 mm) so buyers in different countries can print without scaling. Use only fonts and graphics you have the rights to use.

Step 3: Export and test print

Export as PDF. Print a copy at home to check margins, line spacing and that nothing gets cut off. If your planner is fillable or meant for tablets, test it in a PDF app too.

Step 4: Make preview images

Buyers can't flip through a file before they buy, so show them. Aim for 3–5 images: a cover mockup, a couple of inside pages and a "what's included" image.

Step 5: Write the listing

Lead with a clear title that says what it is and who it's for. In the description, list:

  • What's included (number of pages, sizes)
  • File format and file size
  • How to download and print
  • License terms: personal use only, or commercial use allowed

Before you list: checklist

  • PDF in US Letter and A4
  • Test printed
  • 3–5 preview images
  • Clear title and what's-included list
  • License terms stated
  • Fonts and graphics licensed

Step 6: Pick where to sell

You can list on a marketplace with built-in shoppers or use a checkout you send your own traffic to. Many sellers use both. For packaging and delivery tips that apply to any digital product, see How to Sell Digital Products Online.

How should I price printables?

Look at similar listings and factor in each platform's fees, which can take a bigger share of low-priced items. Check each platform's current pricing page before you set a price.

Listing a printable on Stashly

Stashly is free to sign up and free to post listings. Once your file is ready, you can open a storefront and list it so it shows up in digital products. If you're coming from Etsy, see Stashly vs Etsy.
