Etsy Fees on Cheap Printables: What a $3–$5 Sale Actually Costs

4 min read

Quick answer

Etsy charges a $0.20 USD listing fee per listing and a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total, plus payment processing and any ads you opt into. On a $3 printable, the listing and transaction fees alone come to about $0.40.

Etsy's fees on digital downloads

According to Etsy's help page on fees (checked Nov 3, 2026):

  • Listing fee: $0.20 USD per listing, charged whether or not the item sells. Auto-renewed listings are charged again when they sell, and multi-quantity sales are charged $0.20 for each additional item.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the total order amount in your listing currency.
  • Payment processing and optional ads: extra. We haven't confirmed these figures, so check Etsy's current fee page.

Why a $3 printable loses a bigger share

Fixed per-item fees are a bigger share of a cheap item. Using Etsy's verified listing and transaction fees (before payment processing):

  • $3.00 item: $0.20 + (6.5% × $3.00 = $0.195) = $0.395, about 13.2% of the price.
  • $5.00 item: $0.20 + (6.5% × $5.00 = $0.325) = $0.525, about 10.5%.
  • $20.00 item: $0.20 + (6.5% × $20.00 = $1.30) = $1.50, 7.5%.

On Gumroad, a direct sale of a $3.00 item costs (10% × $3.00 = $0.30) + $0.50 = $0.80, about 27%. On a $20.00 item it's $2.00 + $0.50 = $2.50, or 12.5%. The fixed part hurts most on cheap files.

How Gumroad, Payhip and Ko-fi charge

PlatformWhat their pricing page says
Gumroad10% + $0.50 per transaction for sales through your profile or direct links; 30% when new customers find you through Discover; no monthly charges
PayhipFree Forever $0/mo + 5% transaction fee; Plus $29/mo + 2%; Pro $99/mo, no transaction fee; PayPal/Stripe fees still apply
Ko-fiStandard $0/month + 5% service fee on shop sales; Gold $12/month, 0% service fee; standard payment processor fees also apply

Fees checked on Nov 3, 2026 on each platform's own pricing or help page. Fees change, so check before you decide. Payment processing fees (Stripe, PayPal, card fees) are separate and not included here.

Etsy is a marketplace with built-in shoppers. Payhip and Ko-fi mainly sell to traffic you bring yourself, and Gumroad does both (direct links plus its Discover marketplace at a higher rate). Compare the fee alongside where your buyers will come from.

Is Etsy still worth it for printables?

It depends on whether Etsy's built-in shoppers bring you sales you wouldn't get elsewhere. Run the numbers on your own prices and traffic.

Ways to keep more of each sale

  • Bundle low-priced files. One $12 bundle pays the $0.20 listing fee once instead of four times on four $3 files.
  • Price to match value. A more complete product can justify a higher price, which shrinks the fixed-fee share.
  • Compare fee structures. Percentage-only fees and fixed-plus-percentage fees work out very differently at low prices.
